The Indiana Business Information Alliance will meet this Thursday, January 7, at 1:30 in Irwin Library at Butler University. The purpose of this group is to provide information sharing, collaboration and support for the area of business librarianship. This group is open to academic, special, and public librarians, information specialists, and LIS students. We’ll be discussing international business resources. All those who are interested are welcome to attend.

Jan Davis spends hours a day performing research on the internet for business appraisers. In this session, Jan shows you how she creates targeted searches to get the data she needs quickly and efficiently. Through case studies of how to find guideline public companies, comparable transactions, industry and economic information, executive compensation and data to help build litigation support cases, Jan shows you how to:

Search by file type to zero in on relevant data
Decide when to spend money for data instead of wasting time looking for free information
Incorporate Web 2.0 and social media, such as blogs, podcasts and LinkedIn to find additional information and to ensure you’ve covered your bases

Jan will be joined by Eva Lang for a special “Beat the Recession” segment on the top free sites on the internet for business valuation professionals. [INSLA] Update on Travel Grant and Brian Kelly event

Thank you to those who sent in applications for the InSLA Travel Grant. The InSLA Grant Committee award the grant to Paula Markes. She is very excited to be going to SLA in Washington DC. She cannot wait to share her experience with members of InSLA upon her return.

A Risks and Opportunities Framework for Library 2.0

We are very fortunate to have an outstanding speaker for our April INSLA meeting. Brian Kelly is a leading international expert on Library 2.0 and was an invited plenary speaker at international conferences held in Stockholm, Taiwan and Singapore in 2008. Now he’s been invited to Indianapolis!

He works at UKOLN, a national center of expertise in digital information management which is located at the University of Bath in the UK.

Brian will talk about the potential benefits of exploiting Web 2.0 technologies in the library sector. The popularity of services provided by global companies such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. seems to provide a valuable opportunity for organizations to maximize the impact of their services and content, reach out to new audiences, and develop new services?without the need for significant in-house development work. In addition, the impact of the credit crunch is leading to a realization that funding for in-house development activities may be limited. Web 2.0 appears to provide rich opportunities for libraries of all types.

And yet legitimate concerns have been raised regarding the risks associated with use of such Web 2.0 services. Aren’t the services provided by such companies under similar risks, as the companies seek to consolidate in response to the global economic crisis? And what of concerns ranging from privacy, data protection, and equality for individual users of such services through to long term preservation issues?

This talk describes a risks and opportunities framework that is being developed to support organizations in maximizing the opportunities that can be provided by Web 2.0, while minimizing the associated risks. The framework acknowledges that it will not be possible (or desirable) to eliminate all risks and suggests ways in which workflow processes, new media literacy, and user education can help to reap the dividends which Library 2.0 seeks to provide.
