Save the Date: Library Career Expo Coming March 5, 2009

The Indiana State Library, the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, (SLIS) and the IVY Tech Library Technical Assistant (LTA) invites high school seniors, collegians, library employees, and library professionals to come take a closer look at the myriad of educational and professional library opportunities available in Indiana at the inaugural Library Career Expo.

The Expo, entitled “Indiana Librarianship in the 21st Century,” takes place on Thursday, March 5, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EST) at the IUPUI Main Library in Indianapolis. Attendees may participate in equivalent morning (9:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.) or afternoon (1:10 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) sessions in which they may attend 4 of 7 unique discussions led by leaders in the library field. The Expo is free and open to the general public.

The purpose of the Library Career Expo is to raise awareness of librarianship and career opportunities among Indiana residents. Each discussion will provide insight on a professional or educational subject matter. These topics include: Public Libraries Discussion, Special Libraries Discussion, Academic Libraries Discussion, School Libraries Discussion, Financial Aid for College, Current MLS and LTA Students/Recent Grads Sharing Experiences, Q& A with Lorelle Swader, Director, Office for Human Resources Development and Recruitment at the American Library Association, and SLIS Alumni Board member.

Participants will also have an exclusive opportunity to interact with the library employees, potential employers, and college education providers that will be located in the expo hall throughout the day.

Please stay tuned for the complete program schedule and registration to be announced in January. Immediate questions may be directed to Marcia Smith-Woodard at: mwoodard@library.in.gov; (317) 232-3719; or (800) 451-6028.

Are you interested in the following webcast?

On December 11 (2:00-3:00 Eastern) Click University will have a webcast with Gary Price of Resource Shelf discussing new additions to his tool box.  The program is 75 minutes with a 15 minute Q&A.  The cost will be $25.
For more information see:  http://sla.learn.com/learncenter.asp?page=199
I would be willing to host this webcast at my place of work (96th and Keystone).  I will need a guarantee of 5 people (that would make the cost $5/person) in order to reserve the room. Please let me know by end of day Friday if you are interested in attending. Please feel free to contact with any suggestions on future discussion/CE topics.

SLA–Washington, D.C. 2009 Call for Papers

*THE DEADLINE IS LESS THAN TWO WEEKS AWAY*
SLA Contributed Papers:  An opportunity to share your knowledge!

Are you using your expert knowledge and talents to shape the future?  Do you have a vision of what the future will look like?   Are others inspired by your ideas, innovations, and passion?    How is your workplace preparing for the future?  Do you have valuable insight from lessons learned that could help other information professionals? If so, here is your opportunity to engage in scholarship and share that knowledge with your peers.

SLA is now accepting proposals for papers to be presented at its Annual Conference June 14-17, 2009 in Washington, D.C., with the theme “Information to Inspiration: Knowledge & Vision Shaping the Future.”  Accepted papers will also be published on the SLA website.

Every SLA member is eligible and encouraged to apply.  The deadline for submitting a proposal is December 12, 2008.  All proposals should be sent via email to: jwheeler@ucalgary.ca.  Proposals should be approximately 250-300 words in length. The proposals will be evaluated by a panel of SLA members in a blind review and the strongest will be selected for development into full papers due May 1, 2009.

Topics of the papers should be related to library science, information management, research or other issues related to customer service, technology, or administration in special libraries. Proposals will be judged on their relevance to the conference theme “Information to Inspiration” or the tag “Knowledge and Vision Shaping the Future”, as well on the strength of the idea, quality of writing, and potential member interest.

For more information contact Justine Wheeler at  jwheeler@ucalgary.ca or  visit the SLA webpage: www.sla.org/content/Events/conference/ac2009/Conference/callforpapers/

InSLA’s November meeting at Adobo Grill

Thank you to all that came to Adobo Grill for InSLA’s November meeting.  We had a great discussion going on both ends of the table.  As you may be aware, we have been trying to fill our 2009 slate.  We have some interested parties and will be posting the slate in the next few weeks.  The Board is mulling over a Christmas party in mid-December over the lunch hour on the Northside.  I will be sending more information over the first week of December.  Some topics under discussion for the next year are centering around continuing education and learning about each other’s positions.  Lisa Greer-Douglass, at the NCAA, has offered to host Lunch & Learns at the NCAA.  If you have any topics that interest you, please contact Ro at rochelle.smith@cliftoncpa.com.  A survey will be going out also to see what topics and ideas work for InSLA.

Once again thank you to everyone for attending our November meeting.

Rochelle Smith, President-Elect, InSLA
